“A new Blog huh? Great… just great. Exactly what the world
needs: ANOTHER BLOG.”
“Mines different though…”
“That’s what they all say”
“It’s true!”
“I’ve heard that before”
“It hasn’t been done before!(maybe)”
“Heard that too”
“It’s not about kittens, puppies, or that Canadian little girl
that’s about to get deported for egging their neighbors house and drag racing in
Florida.”
“Now you have my attention…”
This one is for all the Dungeon Masters, Event Organizers,
Game Masters and all the others who spend THEIR precious time trying to make
sure OTHERS have a good time. This is for the DM who spends countless hours on a
module, perfecting every stat of each encounter and collating the loot and exp
in advance, only to have the PC’s kill off the hook character and run off into
the woods after a squirrel.
This is for the Event Organizer that spent weeks prepping to make sure their events go smoothly. They package up each kit for each person and have it organized so they can just grab it and hit the ground running. Then get derailed by someone showing up, trying to halt the whole event and demanding free supplies because some other event is doing it. The fact that it’s clearly listed in the description of the event, both online and in the printed book, mean nothing to them and they do their best to make your life a living hell.
This is for the Game Master who walks their players through a carefully crafted dungeon. They have spent many sleepless nights worrying about every small detail. Then they have some tool who fancies themselves a rules lawyer breaking the immersion constantly to argue about a call. The fact they are clueless to the rules does not hinder them in their attempts to prove they are right using only their verbal skills of “That’s how I’ve always played it!”
This blog is an ode to you oh teller of stories and wrangler of cats. This is your story, and all the jackasses, tools, tom foolery and out right BULLSHIT you have to put up with. Why? Because you are a DM. It is not just what you do, but who you are. You enjoy weaving intrigue for others, and get much joy in doing so. Even though you have been tempted many times to leave it behind, you cannot do so. The bad times are just a part of the ride, and you know it.
So when you are banging your head on the table after a game, remember you are not alone. There’s nothing more we can do when the PC’s derail our plot but throw our hands in the air in resignation and say with a heavy sigh “Fraking Players…”
Yours in Solidarity;
--DM Kirk
